Scientists have identified a previously unknown microscopic marine fungus capable of infecting and killing toxic algae responsible for harmful algal blooms—an unexpected discovery that could reshape how researchers understand the balance of marine ecosystems.
The organism, named Algophthora mediterranea, was identified by an international team of scientists led by researchers at Yokohama National University. The fungus acts as a parasite, infecting algae cells and destroying them within days. Researchers believe it may represent a natural mechanism that helps regulate dangerous algal blooms in the ocean.
A Hidden Player in the Ocean Ecosystem
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) occur when certain species of algae grow rapidly and form dense concentrations in water. These blooms can degrade water quality, deplete oxygen, damage marine ecosystems and release toxins that threaten wildlife and human health.
Some of the most problematic blooms involve the algae Ostreopsis cf. ovata, which produces toxins that can irritate the lungs, skin and eyes of people exposed to sea spray during coastal outbreaks. In recent decades, blooms of this species have become increasingly common in parts of the Mediterranean Sea.
The newly discovered fungus specifically targets these algae. Once attached to the host cell, it grows inside the algae and ultimately kills it, effectively halting the organism’s ability to reproduce and spread. Laboratory observations showed that infected algae cells can die within just a few days.
A New Genus of Marine Fungus
Genetic analysis revealed that the organism is not just a new species but an entirely new genus of fungus. Researchers named it Algophthora, combining the word “alga” with the Greek word phthora, meaning destruction—an appropriate description of its role in killing harmful algae.
Unlike many parasitic fungi that infect only one host, Algophthora mediterranea appears unusually adaptable. Experiments showed it can infect several different algae species, suggesting it may play a broader ecological role in controlling algal populations across marine environments.
The fungus was first detected in seawater samples collected off the Spanish coast in 2021. Researchers later isolated the organism and studied it using time-lapse microscopy, genetic sequencing and electron microscopy to understand how it infects algae and reproduces.
Why Toxic Algae Blooms Matter
Harmful algal blooms are a growing global concern. These events can contaminate seafood, trigger fish kills, close fisheries and pose health risks to coastal communities. In extreme cases, toxins released during blooms have caused respiratory problems in beachgoers and mass die-offs of marine animals.
Blooms can be triggered by a combination of factors, including nutrient pollution from agricultural runoff, warmer ocean temperatures and changing ocean circulation patterns. Scientists warn that climate change may increase the frequency and intensity of some blooms in the future.
Because of these risks, researchers around the world are searching for natural processes that can limit or break down blooms before they become dangerous.
A Potential Natural Control Mechanism
The discovery of Algophthora mediterranea suggests marine fungi may be far more influential in regulating ocean ecosystems than previously believed. Although genetic surveys have revealed many fungal species in marine environments, very few parasitic forms have been studied in detail.
Some scientists believe such fungi could act as natural biological controls, infecting bloom-forming algae and reducing their population size before blooms become large enough to cause ecological or economic damage. Similar fungal parasites have been observed regulating algae in freshwater ecosystems.
However, researchers caution that the ecological role of the newly discovered fungus is still not fully understood. The next step will be determining how widespread the organism is in global oceans and whether it significantly influences real-world algal bloom dynamics.
