However, scientists say biodiversity is now declining faster than at any time in human history.
According to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), around one million species are currently threatened with extinction, many within decades if current trends continue.
Human activities are the primary driver of this loss, including:

These pressures are pushing ecosystems beyond their limits.

Why Biodiversity Loss Matters for Humanity
The consequences of biodiversity collapse extend far beyond wildlife.
Healthy ecosystems underpin global food production. Pollinators such as bees and butterflies are responsible for around one-third of the world’s crop production. Without them, food supplies could become less stable and more expensive.
Natural ecosystems also help regulate the climate by storing carbon in forests, soils, wetlands and oceans. When these systems degrade, they can release stored carbon back into the atmosphere, accelerating climate change.
In addition, many medicines originate from natural compounds found in plants, fungi and marine organisms. Losing biodiversity could mean losing potential future medical breakthroughs.
The World Economic Forum estimates that more than half of global GDP depends moderately or highly on nature, meaning biodiversity decline could have enormous economic consequences.
Warning Signs from Around the Planet
Scientists are increasingly observing ecological changes that indicate ecosystems are under severe stress.
Wildlife populations have plummeted dramatically in recent decades. A major global analysis found that vertebrate wildlife populations have declined by roughly 69% since 1970.
Meanwhile, deforestation in regions such as the Amazon is approaching levels where the forest could shift from a carbon-absorbing ecosystem into a carbon-releasing savannah-like landscape.
Marine ecosystems are also under pressure. Overfishing and warming oceans are reducing fish populations and damaging coral reef systems that millions of people rely on for food and livelihoods.
Experts warn that once certain ecological thresholds are crossed, recovery may become extremely difficult or impossible.
The Link Between Biodiversity and Climate Change
Climate change and biodiversity loss are closely connected and often reinforce one another.
Rising temperatures, extreme weather events and shifting rainfall patterns are forcing species to migrate or adapt quickly. Many cannot keep up with the pace of change.
At the same time, damaged ecosystems become less capable of absorbing carbon and buffering environmental shocks.
Scientists increasingly argue that protecting biodiversity is one of the most effective climate solutions available.
Restoring forests, wetlands, mangroves and grasslands can significantly increase carbon storage while also rebuilding habitats for wildlife.

Governments and financial institutions are increasingly recognising that protecting nature is essential for long-term economic stability.

Scientists say the coming decade will determine whether humanity can reverse the current trajectory of biodiversity loss.
If strong conservation measures are implemented quickly, ecosystems could begin to recover. But if current trends continue, the world risks entering a period of irreversible ecological decline.
