For decades, the destruction of tropical rainforests has been framed as a biodiversity tragedy and a climate change accelerant. But scientists are now warning that the consequences are even more immediate and deadly than previously understood.
New research shows that cutting down tropical forests is directly increasing temperatures in nearby regions — exposing hundreds of millions of people to dangerous heat and contributing to thousands of deaths every year.
The findings mark a significant shift in how deforestation is understood globally. Rainforest loss is no longer just about disappearing wildlife or rising carbon emissions decades into the future. It is becoming a present-day human health crisis.
A study led by researchers from the University of Leeds found that deforestation-driven warming across tropical regions is associated with approximately 28,000 heat-related deaths annually. Over the last two decades, researchers estimate the cumulative death toll may exceed half a million people.
Forests Are Natural Cooling Systems
Tropical forests do far more than absorb carbon dioxide. They actively cool the planet.
Large rainforest trees release massive quantities of water vapor into the atmosphere through a process called evapotranspiration. Similar to how sweat cools the human body, this process removes heat from the air and regulates regional temperatures.
Scientists say a single mature tropical tree can generate as much cooling power as several continuously running air-conditioning units. Across the Amazon, Congo Basin, and Southeast Asian rainforests, billions of trees collectively create vast natural cooling systems that stabilize local and regional climates.
When forests disappear, that cooling mechanism vanishes with them.
Without dense canopy cover, exposed land absorbs more solar radiation, dries more quickly, and heats dramatically faster. Researchers found that tropical areas retaining forest cover warmed by roughly 0.2°C over the last 20 years. Nearby regions that experienced deforestation warmed by approximately 0.7°C — more than three times as fast.
That additional warming may sound small on paper, but for populations already living in extreme heat conditions, even modest temperature increases can become deadly.
Hundreds of Millions Exposed to Dangerous Heat
Using satellite data from 2001 to 2020, scientists mapped forest loss across tropical regions and compared it with land surface temperature changes and population data.
The results revealed a staggering scale of exposure.
More than 300 million people across tropical regions were subjected to higher temperatures linked directly to deforestation. The impacts stretched across multiple continents:
- Approximately 148 million people in Africa
- Around 122 million people in Southeast Asia
- Roughly 67 million people in Central and South America
Countries experiencing rapid forest destruction showed some of the highest exposure levels. Indonesia alone accounted for nearly 49 million people affected by deforestation-driven warming, while the Democratic Republic of Congo and Brazil also recorded significant impacts.
Researchers warn that vulnerable populations face the greatest danger.
Many communities living near tropical forests already experience high humidity, limited healthcare access, poor infrastructure, and restricted access to cooling technologies like air conditioning. In rural areas, large numbers of people also work outdoors for extended periods, increasing the risks associated with extreme heat exposure.
For these populations, the destruction of forests can rapidly intensify dangerous living conditions.
Deforestation Is Becoming a Public Health Emergency
Scientists behind the study argue that tropical deforestation should now be viewed not only as an environmental issue, but as a major public health threat.
Heat stress can trigger dehydration, cardiovascular strain, kidney failure, respiratory complications, and increased mortality — particularly among older adults, children, and outdoor workers.
The study found that in some tropical regions, more than one-third of heat-related deaths may now be associated with deforestation-induced warming.
This reframes the global deforestation crisis in powerful ways.
Historically, rainforest protection campaigns have focused heavily on carbon storage, wildlife conservation, and long-term climate goals. While those concerns remain critical, researchers say the direct human health consequences of deforestation may resonate more urgently with policymakers and local communities.
Protecting forests is increasingly being understood as a way to protect human lives immediately — not just future generations.
Rainforest Loss Continues at Alarming Speed
Despite growing awareness, tropical forests continue disappearing at an alarming rate.
More than 6 million hectares of primary tropical forest were destroyed in 2024 alone, according to recent estimates — an area nearly the size of Panama.
Agricultural expansion remains one of the leading drivers of deforestation globally. Vast areas of rainforest are routinely cleared for cattle ranching, soy production, palm oil plantations, logging operations, mining, and infrastructure development.
The Amazon rainforest, often described as the “lungs of the Earth,” has experienced particularly severe pressure in recent decades. Scientists have repeatedly warned that continued destruction could push parts of the ecosystem toward irreversible ecological collapse.
Meanwhile, deforestation in the Congo Basin and Southeast Asia continues to accelerate regional environmental instability.
Beyond rising temperatures, forest destruction also contributes to worsening droughts, disrupted rainfall patterns, biodiversity collapse, soil degradation, wildfire risk, and declining air quality.
Climate Change and Deforestation Are Intensifying Each Other
The relationship between global warming and deforestation is becoming increasingly interconnected.
Climate change creates hotter, drier conditions that weaken forests and make them more vulnerable to fires and degradation. In turn, deforestation accelerates warming by releasing stored carbon and removing one of Earth’s most effective cooling systems.
Scientists fear this feedback loop could become increasingly difficult to reverse.
As temperatures rise globally, intact tropical forests may become one of humanity’s most important defenses against extreme heat. Their ability to stabilize rainfall and regulate temperature could prove essential for protecting densely populated tropical regions from worsening climate impacts.
Researchers say preserving forests may ultimately be one of the most cost-effective climate adaptation strategies available.
Calls for Stronger International Action
The new findings are already strengthening calls for stronger global forest protection measures.
Environmental groups and climate scientists are urging governments to increase funding for rainforest conservation while supporting Indigenous communities that often serve as the most effective guardians of tropical forests.
Brazil has recently proposed international funding mechanisms designed to financially reward countries for preserving forests instead of clearing them. Similar conservation initiatives are being discussed in other tropical nations, although experts warn current funding levels remain far below what is needed.
Scientists also stress that public awareness remains critical.
For many people living outside tropical regions, deforestation can still feel distant or abstract. But the emerging evidence demonstrates that rainforest destruction is already reshaping human health outcomes on a massive scale.
The cooling services forests provide are not optional environmental luxuries. They are life-support systems.
And as the world grows hotter, their value may become impossible to ignore.
