For years, Asian governments pledged to move away from coal. Net-zero roadmaps, renewable energy targets, and international climate commitments signaled what many believed was the beginning of the end for the world’s dirtiest fossil fuel.
Then came the Iran war.
What began as a geopolitical conflict has rapidly evolved into one of the most disruptive global energy shocks in recent history. As oil shipments slowed, liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices surged, and the Strait of Hormuz became increasingly unstable, countries across Asia were forced into emergency energy measures. The immediate response was not a dramatic acceleration toward green energy — it was a return to coal.
Across South Korea, India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Japan, and the Philippines, governments have delayed coal plant closures, increased imports of thermal coal, and expanded fossil fuel generation to prevent blackouts and economic disruption. Asia’s Energy Emergency

Why Coal Is Returning So Quickly
The speed of coal’s resurgence highlights the structural weaknesses in Asia’s energy transition.
Renewable energy capacity has grown substantially across the region over the past decade, but many countries still lack large-scale battery storage, resilient grids, or enough renewable infrastructure to fully replace fossil fuels during a supply shock.
Coal, meanwhile, remains relatively cheap, abundant, and already integrated into national power systems.
For policymakers facing the prospect of widespread blackouts, economic disruption, and political instability, coal offers immediate short-term stability — even if it undermines long-term climate goals.

These disruptions threaten manufacturing, aviation, tourism, and food supply chains throughout the region.
For developing economies already dealing with inflation and post-pandemic economic pressures, the crisis could deepen financial instability and increase poverty rates.
The United Nations has warned the energy shock could push millions more people into poverty across the Asia-Pacific region if disruptions continue.
A Political Wake-Up Call
Despite the immediate return to coal, the crisis may ultimately accelerate long-term energy transformation.

The Contradiction at the Heart of the Climate Transition
The current crisis reveals one of the biggest contradictions in global climate policy.
Governments want rapid decarbonisation, but political systems still prioritise immediate economic stability above long-term environmental goals. When energy markets collapse or prices surge, short-term survival often overrides climate commitments.

Coal plants once scheduled for retirement are being extended. Fossil fuel imports are rising. Emissions are likely increasing again.
At the same time, the crisis may also reinforce the argument for faster renewable expansion, smarter grids, and energy independence built around sustainable infrastructure rather than volatile fuel imports.
The question is whether governments will treat this crisis as justification for more fossil fuels — or as a warning about the dangers of remaining dependent on them.
Right now, Asia is burning more coal to survive the present.
But the long-term consequences of that decision could shape the global climate future for decades.
