Healthy forests absorb vast quantities of carbon dioxide, regulate water cycles and provide habitat for countless species. Global studies suggest that protecting and restoring ecosystems—including forests, wetlands and grasslands—could deliver up to one-third of the climate mitigation needed by 2030.
Projects such as Europe’s rewilding initiatives, community forest programs and restoration of degraded land demonstrate that effective reforestation can support both climate action and biodiversity recovery.
Experts say the key is integrating tree planting with broader environmental policies that include emissions reductions, sustainable agriculture and ecosystem protection.
