If earthworms could talk, they would tell us something deeply unsettling: the ground beneath our feet is quietly failing.
For centuries, earthworms have been the unseen workforce of the natural world—turning soil, recycling nutrients, and creating the conditions that allow life above ground to thrive. Yet today, across farmland, forests, and even gardens, their numbers are declining. And with them, the health of entire ecosystems is beginning to unravel.
The Underground Network We Take for Granted
Earthworms are often called “ecosystem engineers,” a term that barely captures their importance. As they burrow, they aerate soil, allowing oxygen and water to penetrate deep into the ground. Their castings—nutrient-rich waste—help fertilise plants naturally, reducing the need for synthetic inputs.
Healthy soils depend on them.
In fact, studies from institutions like the Food and Agriculture Organization have repeatedly warned that over 90% of the planet’s soils could be degraded by 2050 if current practices continue. Earthworms are central to preventing that future.
But they are increasingly absent.
A Slow Collapse Beneath the Surface
Modern agriculture has transformed landscapes at an unprecedented scale. Heavy machinery compacts soil, pesticides disrupt biological life, and monoculture farming strips land of its natural diversity.
For earthworms, this combination is devastating.
Research published in journals such as Global Change Biology highlights how intensive farming reduces worm populations dramatically—sometimes by more than half. Even in regions like the UK, where soils once teemed with life, surveys have found alarming declines in biodiversity below ground.
This is not just a loss of worms. It is the breakdown of an entire living system.
Why Their Disappearance Matters
If earthworms could speak, they would not talk about themselves. They would talk about consequences.
Without them, soil becomes compacted and lifeless. Water struggles to infiltrate, increasing flood risks. Crops become more dependent on chemical fertilisers, which further degrade the land. Carbon that should be stored in healthy soil is instead released into the atmosphere, accelerating climate change.
In other words, the loss of earthworms is not a niche environmental issue—it is a direct threat to food security, climate stability, and biodiversity.
The crisis underground mirrors the crises we see above it.
The Illusion of Resilience
On the surface, fields may still look productive. Crops still grow. Harvests still happen.
But this apparent resilience is fragile.
Soils without biodiversity are like hollow infrastructure—functional for now, but prone to collapse. Earthworms play a critical role in maintaining that resilience, acting as a natural buffer against drought, erosion, and extreme weather.
Their disappearance is a warning sign we are choosing to ignore.
A Path Back to Living Soil

Across the world, farmers and conservationists are beginning to adopt regenerative practices. Reduced tillage, cover cropping, organic inputs, and rewilding efforts are all helping to restore soil life.
In the UK, initiatives supported by organisations like the Soil Association are encouraging a shift toward farming methods that work with nature rather than against it.
Where these practices are implemented, earthworms often return. Slowly, but unmistakably.
It is proof that recovery is possible—if action is taken in time.
Listening to What Isn’t Said
If Earth worms could communicate, their message would be written in failing soils, declining yields, and ecosystems under strain. A message that reminds us that life on Earth depends as much on what lies beneath our feet as what stands before our eyes.
One key message would be to stop treating soil as dirt—and start recognising it as the living foundation of everything.
