If Krill Could Talk

In the Southern Ocean, the water can look empty—an endless slate of steel-blue beneath a hard sky. But if krill could talk, they might laugh at the idea of emptiness. They would tell you the Antarctic isn’t powered by whales or penguins or even the charismatic, camera-friendly seal. It’s powered by swarms: billions of thumbnail-sized crustaceans, flickering through the dark like living confetti.

And then, krill might ask a pointed question: If so much of ocean life runs on our backs, why are humans increasingly treating us like a commodity rather than a cornerstone?

Because krill—especially Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba)—sit at a strange intersection of wonder and risk. They are both a keystone prey species in one of Earth’s most extreme ecosystems and a growing target for industrial fishing, processed into omega-3 supplements, aquaculture and livestock feed, and pet food. In the last few years, concerns have sharpened: not necessarily that the Southern Ocean is being “emptied,” but that krill fishing can become dangerously concentrated in the same hotspots where whales, seals and penguins feed—at the exact moment climate change is already reshaping krill habitat.

So—do krill have one of the most key roles in the ecosystem? Most scientists and conservation groups answer with an emphatic yes. But they add a caveat: our understanding of krill is still incomplete, and in a rapidly changing ocean, “probably fine” is not a management strategy.

The tiny animal that feeds a continent of predators

If you lined up the Southern Ocean’s celebrity animals—humpback whales, minke whales, leopard seals, Adélie penguins, chinstraps, macaroni penguins—many would share the same primary menu item: krill.

The reason is simple ecology. Krill eat phytoplankton—microscopic plants that bloom when light and nutrients align. Krill then convert that plant energy into protein and fat in massive, tightly packed swarms. Predators don’t need to chase thousands of individual prey; they can charge into a living buffet.

This is why krill are often described as a keystone species—not because everything eats them all the time, but because so many iconic predators rely on them heavily enough that disruptions ripple outward fast. Krill aren’t just food. They’re part of the ocean’s carbon engine.

If krill could deliver a second headline, it might be: We’re not only prey—we help move carbon into the deep ocean.

Here’s the basic idea: phytoplankton take up carbon dioxide at the surface. When krill graze on them, that carbon is repackaged into fast-sinking material—fecal pellets and other organic debris—that can drop into deeper waters, where carbon can be stored for long periods.

Of course, carbon cycling is complex, and scientists debate details like how much carbon stays down and for how long. But the direction of travel is clear: krill support life—and they likely support climate stability, too.

So how “good” are krill for the ecosystem? About as good as it gets

As a species group, krill are a kind of ecological Swiss Army knife:

  • They convert plankton into “big animal food.” That’s the foundational service.
  • They influence nutrient recycling. Their feeding and waste products help redistribute nutrients through the water column.

When krill thrive, the system has fuel. When krill falter—due to warming, sea ice changes, ocean acidification, or other stressors—everything above them can wobble.

Commercial krill fishing has existed for decades, but the modern concern isn’t only total tonnage. It’s that industrial vessels can extract krill very efficiently—and can do it in the same places predators feed.
