Why the Amur tiger is going hungry—and increasingly seeking prey in villages of Russia’s far east

In the remote forests of Russia’s Far East, the world’s largest big cat is re-emerging—though not in the way conservationists had hoped. Once rarely seen and then recovering slowly, the Amur tiger is now increasingly venturing out of its deep‐taiga habitat, into areas populated by people, dogs and livestock.

That blunt assessment draws a sharp picture: starvation is driving these apex predators beyond their traditional territories in search of food—and the consequences are being felt by both wild animals and local communities.
The tiger’s hunger isn’t just an animal story: it is the outcome of a cascade of ecological pressures that are unraveling the delicate balance of the Russian Far East’s forests. A fatal winter of tiger attacks
The winter of 2024–25 proved to be a grim turning point. On the edge of forested villages, the once‐silent Amur tiger started surfacing at night. First the guard dogs vanished, then livestock, and finally, tragically, humans. One ice-fisherman was mauled and dragged off; another man was partly eaten. Official figures from the main conservation authority report around 20 attacks on humans between 2010 and 2024, resulting in 13 injuries and 7 deaths—though experts suspect the real number is higher, and say the underlying story isn’t one of wanton tiger aggression but of hunger and desperation.
From October 2024 to September 2025, at least 17 Amur tigers were killed and 27 captured; among the captured, many were found emaciated, dehydrated or wounded.
“In my area we found a tiger that weighed barely half of what we expected for a male,” one field operative told The Guardian.
These incidents underscore the breakdown of the wild ecology: a predator so desperate for food that it ventures into human landscapes it once avoided.
What is driving the hunger?
1. African swine fever roars through wild boar populations
One of the key prey species for Amur tigers is wild boar—particularly favoured by tigresses with cubs. But wild boars in the far east of Russia have been devastated by African swine fever (ASF), a fatal disease that has killed perhaps 90-100 % of infected pigs and wild boars.
Scientists describe this outbreak as an ecological disaster. With boar populations collapsing, tigers have lost one of their main food sources—and this is having ripple effects through the forest ecosystem.
2. Poaching of deer and breakdown of prey base
Even before the boar epidemic, the prey base for the Amur tiger was under pressure. Unchecked poaching of deer—another key food source—has eroded the number of animals the tiger can hunt. In some areas the decline in deer has been drastic.
As one forest researcher put it: “If we keep the ecosystem, we keep the tigers. African swine fever wouldn’t be such a big problem if the forest was in good condition.”
3. Logging and industrial development – shrinking territory, increasing vulnerability
The tiger’s forest home is under siege from multiple fronts: logging, mining, human settlement and infrastructure. These activities fragment habitat, reduce prey, and push tigers closer to human settlements.
As habitat shrinks and prey dives, the tigers are forced to range more widely—and confront riskier human landscapes. This includes village edges, livestock corrals and even roads where collisions are increasingly reported.

Compounding the issue is local fear and a breakdown in trust: In one village social media channels erupted after a tigress killed guard dogs; some residents pledged to boycott local elections until they felt better protected.
Another striking layer: a recent academic study found that 46 % of reported tiger traffic‐collision deaths (on roads/rails) occurred between 2020-2023, following the boar outbreak and prey crash. Less food means tigers roam further, crossing roads and rail tracks more often—and suffering fatal accidents.
Why the official narrative may be misleading
The state‐appointed Amur Tiger Centre in Russia claims that human-deaths from tiger attacks are “extremely rare” and that most are provoked by humans. It reports that from 2010–24, 20 attacks occurred (18 provoked by humans) and that recent cases fall within “overall statistics”.
But conservationists are sceptical. They note:
- Official figures may be under‐reported.
- Many tigresses and tigers are unmonitored in remote terrain, making data patchy.
- Public discussion of tiger hunger, habitat degradation and conflict is politically sensitive; many experts remain anonymous for fear of repercussions.
One specialist said: “People want to highlight this to the government but they do not want to listen.”
Thus, while the official line emphasises stability and recovery (the government claims about 750 wild Amur tigers in Russia), many on‐the‐ground biologists say the situation is far more precarious.
What this means for the Amur tiger’s survival prospects
The combination of prey collapse, habitat degradation, and rising conflict raises serious questions about the long‐term viability of the Amur tiger in the wild.
Population viability under threat
Despite the government’s claims of population recovery from as low as 40 tigers in the 1940s, the current estimated 750 or so animals may overstate the situation. Fragmentation, isolation and poor prey base all endanger small populations. With depleted food supplies, the risk of death by starvation, disease and conflict increases.
Genetic bottlenecks and isolation
Small, isolated populations are vulnerable to inbreeding, disease and demographic collapse. As tigers are forced into smaller patches of forest and cross into human landscapes more often, their vulnerability rises.
Escalating conflict sets back conservation
When tigers kill livestock or humans, local backlash often includes retaliatory killings or demands for removal of animals. This undermines conservation efforts, alienates local communities, and may feed into a cycle of depredation, fear and control.
Global implications
Though the Amur tiger is regionally isolated in Russia (and marginally in neighbouring China), its decline has broader symbolic and ecological implications. The tiger is an apex predator; its health reflects the health of the entire forest ecosystem. A starving tiger signals a forest in crisis.

Conservationists argue that rebuilding the forest ecosystem must be a priority: reducing illegal logging, restoring key prey species (wild boar, deer) and improving habitat connectivity. As one specialist put it: “If we keep the ecosystem, we keep the tigers.”
Monitor and manage disease outbreaks
African swine fever’s impact on wild boar is a stark warning. Monitoring, early detection and management of wildlife diseases must form part of any big-cat conservation strategy.
Co-existence and human-wildlife conflict mitigation
State agencies and NGOs must work with local communities to minimise conflict: compensation for livestock loss, secure corrals, community education, rapid response to attacks. Village populations need to feel safe and empowered rather than powerless.
Transparent data and open research
Independent monitoring of tiger populations, prey numbers and conflict incidents is required. When data is politicised or suppressed, conservation decisions become less credible and effective.
International cooperation and funding
While this is a Russian matter to a large extent, tigers are a global conservation icon. Funding, technical support and international attention can help bolster local efforts. Conservation of one of Earth’s largest predators is not only a national matter but a global ethical and ecological one.

The image of the Amur tiger as a ghost of the Siberian forest has captured imaginations for decades. Now, forced to leave the forest to survive, the tiger is telling us a story about the forest itself—from prey collapse and ecological disease to habitat loss and human encroachment.
In the final analysis, the question is stark: can a predator that has evolved to roam vast expanses of taiga survive in a world where its range shrinks, its food vanishes and its territory overlaps increasingly with human settlements?
One thing is clear: the consequences of a hungry tiger are felt not only by the animal, but by people, communities, and ecosystems. The haunting question now becomes: what will the next winter bring—more human-tiger conflict, fewer tigers, or a renewed commitment to restore the wild balance?
