Rising global temperatures are making everyday physical activity increasingly dangerous across large parts of the world.
A growing body of research suggests the climate crisis is already changing how people live and move. A new international study finds that extreme heat is now so intense in many regions that it significantly limits how safely people can perform even basic physical tasks. Scientists say the findings offer a stark preview of what a warmer planet could mean for human health, work, and daily life.
Heat Is Beginning to Restrict Everyday Human Activity
The study, published in the journal Environmental Research: Health, examined global temperature and humidity data alongside population demographics to determine how much physical activity people can safely perform under different heat conditions. Instead of simply measuring temperature extremes, researchers asked a more practical question: what can the human body actually do in that heat?
Their conclusion is sobering. Climate change has doubled the number of hours per year that people experience “life-limiting” heat, conditions where sustained physical activity becomes unsafe.
In these conditions, even relatively mild activities — such as walking, cleaning, or light outdoor work — can push the human body toward dangerous overheating.
The study estimates that around one-third of the global population now experiences these dangerous heat conditions, particularly during the hottest parts of the year.
The Elderly Face the Greatest Risk
While extreme heat affects everyone, the research highlights that older adults are significantly more vulnerable.
Scientists estimate that people over the age of 65 now endure about 900 hours each year of heat conditions that restrict physical activity, compared with roughly 600 hours annually in the mid-20th century.
As people age, their bodies become less efficient at regulating internal temperature, making them more susceptible to heat stress, dehydration, and heatstroke.
This is particularly concerning given that the global population is aging rapidly, meaning more people will face elevated health risks from heat exposure in the coming decades.
Tropical and Low-Income Regions Are Hit Hardest
The study found the greatest exposure to dangerous heat conditions in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of:
- South Asia
- West Africa
- The Middle East
- Southeast Asia
Ironically, many of these regions have contributed relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions.
Researchers say these regions often lack cooling infrastructure, reliable electricity, or heat-adapted urban design, making populations especially vulnerable to rising temperatures.
A Hidden Threat to Public Health
Extreme heat is already considered one of the deadliest climate-related hazards worldwide, responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths annually.
Beyond direct heatstroke, scientists warn that excessive heat can also worsen:
- cardiovascular disease
- kidney failure
- dehydration
- respiratory illnesses
- mental health stress
High temperatures also discourage outdoor exercise and daily movement, increasing sedentary lifestyles and associated health risks.
Heat Is Reshaping How Humans Live and Work
The implications of rising temperatures extend far beyond health.
Heat waves are already forcing changes to:
- outdoor labour schedules
- sporting events
- agriculture
- infrastructure planning
Research into human mobility patterns shows that activity levels can drop by 10–20% during extreme heat, particularly during the hottest afternoon hours.
For millions of workers — including farmers, construction workers, and delivery drivers — this represents a growing challenge to both safety and productivity.
A Warning for a Warming World
Perhaps the most striking finding is that these restrictions on human activity are emerging after just over 1°C of global warming compared with pre-industrial temperatures.
Scientists warn that if warming continues toward 1.5°C or 2°C, large parts of the planet could experience significantly longer periods each year where strenuous outdoor activity becomes unsafe.
Without rapid reductions in fossil fuel use, researchers say the constraints on human livability will only expand.
Adapting to a Hotter Planet
Experts say both adaptation and emissions reductions are needed to protect communities.
Possible solutions include:
- heat-resilient urban design
- increased tree cover and green spaces
- cooling centres and public shade
- improved worker protections
- climate-resilient infrastructure
At the same time, researchers stress that slowing global warming remains essential.
“Unless we reduce emissions from oil, coal and gas,” scientists warn, “extreme heat will increasingly limit where and how people can safely live and work.”
