Sweden has built one of the most advanced waste management systems on Earth—so effective that it faces an unusual challenge: not enough rubbish.
With less than 1% of household waste ending up in landfill, the country has nearly eliminated one of the world’s biggest environmental problems. Instead, almost all waste is either recycled or converted into energy, creating a system that blurs the line between disposal and resource production.

Switzerland offers a similar model, with high recycling rates and a ban on landfilling combustible waste. Like Sweden, it relies heavily on waste-to-energy systems.
However, Sweden stands apart due to its large-scale waste imports and its extensive district heating network, making it a global case study in turning waste into a national energy asset.
