Ants are found on every continent except Antarctica. From the dense humidity of the Amazon rainforest to the dry expanses of African savannas and even urban pavements in Europe, ants have adapted to nearly every terrestrial environment on Earth.
Scientists estimate there are over 12,000 known species of ants, with thousands more yet to be classified. In terms of sheer biomass, ants collectively rival that of humans. A widely cited study once suggested that the total weight of all ants on Earth may equal or even exceed that of all people combined.
Their distribution spans nearly every country, thriving in ecosystems as varied as tropical forests, deserts, grasslands, and temperate woodlands. This global reach makes ants not just participants in ecosystems—but foundational players.
Nature’s Underground Architects
Beneath the surface lies one of the most important contributions ants make: soil engineering.
As ants dig their intricate tunnel systems, they loosen and aerate the soil. This process improves water infiltration, reduces soil compaction, and enhances root growth for plants. In agricultural terms, ants function like natural ploughs—constantly turning and revitalising the earth.
Their tunnelling also redistributes nutrients deeper into the soil layers. Organic material carried underground is broken down and integrated into the soil, enriching it with essential compounds that plants depend on.
In ecosystems where soil quality determines survival, ants quietly tip the balance in favour of growth.
The Ultimate Recycling Workforce
Ants are relentless recyclers.
From fallen leaves to dead insects and even food scraps left behind by other animals, ants collect, transport, and process organic waste at an astonishing scale. This natural clean-up system prevents the buildup of decaying material and accelerates nutrient cycling.
Leafcutter ants, for example, harvest vegetation not for direct consumption but to cultivate fungus—an advanced agricultural system that predates human farming by millions of years. In doing so, they convert plant matter into forms that re-enter the ecosystem as usable nutrients.
Without ants, decomposition would slow, nutrients would stagnate, and ecosystems would gradually lose efficiency.
Guardians of Biodiversity
In many ecosystems, particularly rainforests, ants act as unseen gardeners.
Through a process known as myrmecochory (seed dispersal by ants), these insects transport seeds away from the parent plant, reducing competition and increasing the chances of survival. Some seeds even produce nutrient-rich appendages specifically designed to attract ants—an evolutionary partnership millions of years in the making.
Certain plants, like acacias, go a step further by forming mutualistic relationships with ants. The plant provides food and shelter, while ants defend it from herbivores and invasive species.

Research suggests that ants can impact carbon cycling by altering soil composition and microbial activity. Some species contribute to the breakdown of minerals, which can indirectly affect atmospheric carbon levels over long timescales.
They also serve as a critical food source for countless species, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. Remove ants, and entire food webs begin to unravel.
In ecological terms, ants are what scientists call “ecosystem engineers”—organisms that modify their environment in ways that affect many other species.
