The Forgotten Ecosystems Holding Back Climate Change

When conversations turn to climate solutions, forests often dominate the discussion. Yet beneath vast stretches of wetlands, bogs, fens, and marshes lies one of the planet’s most powerful natural climate defenses: peatlands.

Marked annually on June 2, World Peatlands Day serves as a reminder that these waterlogged ecosystems are among Earth’s most effective carbon stores. Despite covering just 3–4% of the world’s land surface, peatlands contain nearly one-third of all global soil carbon—more than twice the carbon stored in the world’s forests combined.

As climate change intensifies and nations search for scalable environmental solutions, scientists increasingly view peatland protection as one of the fastest and most cost-effective strategies available. Yet around the world, these critical ecosystems remain threatened by agriculture, drainage, infrastructure development, mining, and increasingly severe wildfires.

World Peatlands Day is therefore more than a symbolic environmental event. It is a call to protect one of the planet’s most important natural allies in the fight against climate change.

What Exactly Are Peatlands?

Peatlands form when dead vegetation accumulates in waterlogged conditions faster than it can decompose. Over thousands of years, layers of partially decayed organic matter create deep carbon-rich soils known as peat.

These ecosystems appear in many forms, including bogs, fens, swamps, marshes, and tropical peat forests. They exist across more than 180 countries, from the Arctic tundra and northern Europe to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, the Congo Basin, and South America.

What makes peatlands remarkable is their ability to lock away carbon for centuries or even millennia. The waterlogged environment slows decomposition dramatically, preventing carbon from returning to the atmosphere.

This long-term storage function has made peatlands one of the largest terrestrial carbon reservoirs on Earth. Scientists estimate they store between 500 and 600 billion tonnes of carbon globally.

Why Peatlands Matter for Climate Stability

Climate scientists often describe peatlands as “natural climate vaults.”

When peatlands remain intact, they continuously absorb and store carbon. However, when drained or disturbed, the opposite occurs. Carbon that has accumulated over thousands of years begins escaping into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide and methane.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), approximately 12% of the world’s peatlands have already been degraded. Despite representing only a small fraction of global land area, degraded peatlands contribute around 4% of annual human-induced greenhouse gas emissions.

The scale of these emissions is alarming. Environmental researchers have estimated that if drained and burning peatlands were considered a country, their emissions would rank among the world’s largest contributors to climate change.

This reality places peatlands at the centre of global climate strategies. Protecting existing peatlands can prevent enormous carbon releases, while restoring damaged peatlands offers a relatively inexpensive pathway to reducing future emissions.

Beyond Carbon: The Biodiversity Value of Peatlands

While their role in carbon storage often receives the most attention, peatlands provide a range of environmental services that extend far beyond climate regulation.

Healthy peatlands support thousands of unique plant and animal species, many of which cannot survive elsewhere. They provide habitat for rare birds, amphibians, insects, fish, and mammals, while supporting complex ecological networks that contribute to regional biodiversity.

In tropical regions, peat swamp forests provide habitat for iconic endangered species, including orangutans, clouded leopards, and numerous endemic bird species. The Congo Basin’s peatlands alone represent one of the largest and most significant carbon-rich wilderness areas on Earth.

As global biodiversity continues to decline at unprecedented rates, peatlands have emerged as critical refuges for wildlife facing habitat loss elsewhere.

Natural Defenses Against Floods and Droughts

Peatlands also function as giant natural sponges.

Their water-rich soils absorb rainfall during wet periods and gradually release water during dry conditions. This process helps regulate river flows, reduce flooding risks, improve water quality, and strengthen resilience to drought.

Communities living near healthy peatlands often benefit from cleaner drinking water and greater protection from extreme weather events. Scientists increasingly recognise that peatland restoration can contribute significantly to climate adaptation efforts as rainfall patterns become more unpredictable.

These hydrological benefits are becoming increasingly important as climate change drives more frequent and severe flooding events around the world.

Why Peatlands Are Under Threat

Despite their environmental importance, peatlands remain among the least protected ecosystems on Earth.

Globally, only around 17% of peatlands currently fall within protected areas, significantly lower than protection levels for many forests and coastal ecosystems.

Major threats include:

  • Agricultural expansion
  • Drainage for forestry operations
  • Infrastructure development
  • Peat extraction for horticulture and fuel
  • Mining and resource extraction
  • Increased wildfire activity linked to climate change

In many countries, drained peatlands are converted into farmland, particularly for palm oil production and commercial agriculture. Once drained, these landscapes become highly vulnerable to fires, which can release enormous quantities of carbon into the atmosphere in a matter of weeks.

Researchers estimate that around 500,000 hectares of peatlands are lost or severely degraded every year due to human activities.

Restoration Efforts Are Expanding

The growing recognition of peatlands’ climate value has sparked a wave of international restoration initiatives.

Organizations such as the Global Peatlands Initiative, UNEP, conservation groups, and national governments are investing in projects designed to rewet drained peatlands, halt destructive land-use practices, and restore degraded ecosystems.

Rewetting is particularly effective because it raises groundwater levels and slows the decomposition of peat. Studies show that restoring natural hydrological conditions can dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving biodiversity and water management.

Countries including Indonesia, Scotland, Finland, Germany, and Canada have increasingly incorporated peatland restoration into broader climate and biodiversity strategies.

In Scotland, the Flow Country—one of Europe’s largest blanket bog systems—has become a flagship example of large-scale peatland recovery and protection efforts.

A Climate Solution Hiding in Plain Sight

As governments prepare future climate commitments, peatlands are increasingly being recognised as a nature-based solution capable of delivering multiple environmental benefits simultaneously.

Unlike some emerging carbon-removal technologies that remain expensive and largely experimental, peatland conservation is immediately available, scientifically proven, and often relatively low-cost.

Protecting peatlands helps reduce emissions, safeguard biodiversity, improve water security, and increase resilience against climate-related disasters.

The challenge is no longer understanding their importance. It is ensuring political will, funding, and international cooperation arrive quickly enough to prevent further degradation.

Looking Ahead: Why World Peatlands Day Matters

World Peatlands Day arrives at a critical moment for global climate action.

Scientists continue to warn that limiting global warming will require not only reducing fossil fuel emissions but also protecting the natural systems that already regulate Earth’s climate. Peatlands sit at the heart of that effort.

For decades, these ecosystems have remained largely overlooked compared to forests, oceans, and renewable energy technologies. Yet their influence on the climate system is immense.

As countries pursue net-zero ambitions and biodiversity targets, safeguarding peatlands could become one of the defining environmental priorities of the coming decade.

The message behind World Peatlands Day is simple but urgent: protecting these hidden ecosystems may be one of humanity’s most effective tools for preserving a stable climate, healthy biodiversity, and a more resilient future.
