What the Ocean’s Most Misunderstood Predator Might Tell Us
For half a century, much of the world has met them through a soundtrack of dread: the two-note pulse of Jaws, the viral clips of dorsal fins slicing surf, the breathless headlines after a rare bite. But sharks—more than 500 species ranging from the whale shark to the lantern-lit deep-sea dogfish—are less a single villain than a living system of ocean “job roles”: hunters, scavengers, grazers of the food web’s weak links, and—crucially—regulators that keep marine ecosystems from slipping out of balance.
They might also say this: fear is loud, but fishing is louder.
Scientists have documented a steep global decline in oceanic sharks and rays since 1970, driven primarily by increased fishing pressure. One landmark analysis found oceanic shark and ray abundance down 71% since 1970, alongside an 18-fold increase in relative fishing pressure. (Nature)
So what happens if the ocean loses its most famous predators—and why are we still so fascinated by them?
The ecosystem case for sharks: not “nice to have,” but functional
Sharks sit high in many marine food webs, which means their presence can shape what happens below them. In healthy systems, predators don’t just remove prey—they influence where prey feed, how they behave, and which species thrive. That ripple effect can help prevent boom-and-bust cycles that degrade reefs, seagrass meadows, and other habitats.
WWF frames sharks as “key to the health of our oceans and climate,” arguing that losing top and mid-level predators can trigger cascading effects—from prey population surges to habitat loss in carbon-storing underwater ecosystems. (worldwildlife.org)
NOAA, too, emphasizes sharks as essential components of marine ecosystems—often described as keystone species—because shifts in their ranges and prey can have broader ecological impacts. (NOAA Fisheries)
“If you remove the regulators, the system doesn’t stay the same—it reorganizes.”
But the science is also more nuanced than the popular line “sharks keep everything balanced.” Research groups studying shark ecology note that effects vary by species and location, and not every ecosystem response is identical. Florida International University’s Institute of Environment highlights that while many studies show sharks can help maintain biodiversity and ecosystem health, not all studies find sharks are critical and not all species have equal impacts. That nuance matters—because conservation arguments are strongest when they’re honest. Sharks are not magic “ocean janitors.” They are, however, often an important part of how oceans stay resilient.
What major organizations are saying: WWF, NOAA—and the push to protect sharks as climate actors
In recent years, conservation messaging has broadened: sharks are not only biodiversity icons; they’re increasingly discussed as part of climate resilience.
WWF connects predator loss to habitat degradation, including carbon-storing habitats, making the case that protecting sharks supports the ocean systems that help buffer climate change. (worldwildlife.org)
NOAA’s climate-focused reporting describes how warming temperatures, changing prey distribution, and more intense storms can affect sharks and rays—altering where they travel and how healthy populations remain. (NOAA Fisheries)
And the climate risk isn’t abstract. Peer-reviewed research has begun mapping vulnerability across shark species, warning that climate change will affect sharks broadly under different emissions scenarios. (ScienceDirect)
Apex predators… but are sharks the apex of the sea?
“Apex predator of the sea” is a phrase that sells documentaries—and it’s often true in context. Great whites, tiger sharks, bull sharks, and others can sit at or near the top of local food webs. But “apex” is less a crown than a relationship: who eats whom, where, and under what conditions.
Enter the orca.
In several regions, killer whales have been documented hunting sharks, including great whites—sometimes targeting the energy-rich liver. A 2025 report described a long-running pattern off South Africa in which a pair of orcas has killed great whites and other sharks, with knock-on effects such as sharks abandoning certain areas. So is the apex title debatable? In practice: yes. Orcas are highly intelligent, social hunters capable of taking large prey—including sharks—and in places where they target sharks, they can function as the “apex above the apex.”

The bigger point: whether a great white is top predator or second-in-command under an orca doesn’t diminish sharks’ ecological importance. It just makes the ocean’s hierarchy more interesting—and more complex.
Shark fin soup: the numbers are staggering, even when they’re estimates
If sharks could talk, this might be the part where they stop being philosophical.
Exact figures are difficult because shark fishing and fin trade include legal, illegal, and unreported catches. But credible estimates converge on a brutal scale: tens to hundreds of millions of sharks killed each year.
One widely cited estimate puts annual shark mortality in the tens of millions to hundreds of millions; for example, research summaries cite ranges such as 63 to 273 million sharks killed annually. (eOceans)
And conservation groups estimate that roughly 73 million sharks a year are linked to the fin trade specifically. (sharkguardian)
What does that look like per day? Even using the conservative end—63 million a year—that’s ~172,000 sharks a day. At 100 million, it’s ~274,000 a day. At 273 million, it’s nearly three quarters of a million a day.

Who is eating them?
Consumption has historically been concentrated in parts of East and Southeast Asia, with Hong Kong often described as a major trading hub and mainland China a key consumer market. Institute for Environmental Research
The story is also changing: awareness campaigns and policy shifts have reportedly reduced consumption in some places, but demand persists across banquets, weddings, luxury dining, and diaspora communities.
Are shark attacks rising because of climate change?
This is where sharks would probably ask for a fact-check.
The short version: the data do not support a simple “climate change = more shark attacks” claim. The picture is complicated.
The International Shark Attack File (ISAF)—the world’s most cited scientific record of shark bites—reported 47 confirmed unprovoked shark bites globally in 2024, with 24 provoked bites, after investigating 88 alleged interactions. Florida Museum

That doesn’t mean climate change is irrelevant. Warming seas can shift where sharks and people overlap, and changing ecosystems can alter shark behaviour and prey availability. NOAA notes climate-driven impacts on habitat and prey distribution for sharks and rays. (NOAA Fisheries)
But “more overlap” isn’t the same thing as “more bites,” and bites are heavily influenced by human behaviour: where people swim, surf, and fish; how many people are in the water; and how often sharks are present in nearshore surf zones.
If sharks could talk, they might say: you’ve changed the ocean—and then you ask why the ocean feels different.
The “Jaws effect”: fear, fascination, and the power of a story
Jaws didn’t invent shark fear, but it industrialized it. The film became a cultural shorthand: shark as monster, the sea as threat. Yet the same pop culture engine that helped vilify sharks also fuels today’s counter-narrative: sharks as threatened wildlife that need protection.
As the 50th anniversary of Jaws spurred renewed attention, recent coverage has pointed to how sharks are simultaneously famous and imperiled—an animal everyone recognizes, but few can name beyond “great white.” (The Washington Post)
This tension—terror versus awe—is arguably why sharks remain so captivating. They are ancient (sharks predate dinosaurs), visually iconic, and truly capable predators. Our brains don’t file them under “cute.” We file them under “important to remember.”
“We fear sharks partly because we can’t negotiate with the ocean.”
The irony is that sharks are far more at risk from humans than humans are from sharks—and the numbers prove it.

If sharks could talk, what would they ask of us?
Probably not admiration—sharks have never needed our approval.
They would ask for fewer hooks, tighter enforcement, traceable seafood supply chains, and protected areas that actually protect. They would ask that finning bans come with monitoring, that “sustainable” labels mean something real, and that our stories about sharks stop oscillating between monster and mascot.
And if they could offer one final line for our species—who loves the ocean but empties it—it might be this:
“You don’t have to love sharks. You just have to let them live.”
