If bees could talk, the first thing they might say is: “You don’t notice us until we’re gone.”
These small insects underpin a huge share of life on Earth. Around 75% of global food crop types rely on animal pollinators – mainly bees – for at least some of their production, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. (FAO.org) More than 80% of wild flowering plant species also depend on animal pollination, making bees central not just to our diets, but to entire ecosystems. (ipbes.net)
Some scientists and campaigners have dubbed them “the most important living beings on Earth”. It’s a catchy phrase – and not entirely hyperbole.
But bees are in trouble. Across Europe, more than a third of bee species are in decline, and the number of wild bee species at risk of extinction has more than doubled in the last decade. (WWF.org.uk)
So if bees could stand before a microphone at the UN, what would they say?
“We feed you. You’re making it harder for us to feed ourselves.”
Are Bees “Critically Endangered”? The Nuanced Reality
One of the most common questions is blunt: are bees critically endangered?
The short answer is: some are in serious danger – and the trend is alarming – but “bees” as a whole group are not yet classified as critically endangered.
There are more than 20,000 known bee species worldwide, from familiar honeybees and bumblebees to solitary mason bees and tiny sweat bees. Frontiers Their conservation status varies:
- Wild honeybees in Europe (the western honeybee Apis mellifera living in the wild, not managed in hives) were officially classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List in the EU in 2025 – meaning they face a very high risk of extinction in the wild. (coloss.org)
- An updated European Red List assessment found at least 172 wild bee species are now at risk of extinction in Europe, up from around 80 species a decade ago. (The Guardian)
- Globally, many individual bee species are assessed as Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered, but there is no single “global status” that covers all bees.
Managed honeybee numbers in some regions have actually increased because humans keep more hives for commercial pollination and honey. But this can mask serious problems:
- High colony losses are becoming the norm. In the US, beekeepers recently reported record annual losses averaging around 60% of colonies, driven by parasites, disease, pesticides and climate stress. (The Guardian)
- Native wild bees, which often do much of the heavy lifting for pollination, are harder to monitor but show clear signs of decline across many countries. (Frontiers)
Put simply: bees as a group have not vanished – yet. But many species are sliding down the Red List, and crucial pollinators are disappearing from landscapes where they once thrived. Conservation groups warn that we are playing ecological roulette.

What’s Killing the Buzz? The Main Culprits
Ask scientists what is driving bee declines and they rarely point to a single villain. Instead, they describe a “death by a thousand cuts” scenario, with multiple pressures stacking on top of one another.
1. Habitat Loss and Industrial Farming
The biggest, most persistent threat is the way we use land.
- Intensive agriculture replaces diverse meadows, hedgerows and woodland edges with monocultures – huge fields of a single crop, often flowering for just a short window. This means far less year-round food and nesting habitat for bees. (Cabi Digital Library)
- Heavy fertiliser use encourages fast-growing grasses that crowd out wildflowers. One long-running UK study found that plots treated with fertiliser had around half as many pollinators and far fewer flowers than unfertilised plots, with bees especially affected. (The Guardian)
- Urban sprawl and infrastructure projects fragment remaining habitats, making it harder for bees to move, find mates and recolonise areas.
If bees could talk, they might call this “the great thinning of the world” – landscapes that look green from a distance but are, to them, food deserts.
2. Pesticides – Especially Neonicotinoids
Modern pesticides are another major pressure. Research has repeatedly linked certain insecticides – particularly neonicotinoids – to problems such as:
- Impaired navigation and foraging
- Reduced reproduction
- Weakened immune systems
Studies have found that even when used within legal safety limits, cocktails of pesticides can interact in dangerous ways, reducing survival and resilience in bees and other pollinators. (Beekeeper Corner)
The EU has restricted many neonicotinoids outdoors, and some countries have gone further, but enforcement gaps and new chemicals mean the pesticide problem is far from solved.
3. Parasites and Disease
If habitat loss and pesticides are background stress, parasites are the assassins.
The Varroa destructor mite – a parasite of honeybees – spreads a suite of debilitating viruses. It weakens colonies, reduces lifespan and can wipe out hives over winter. Recent reports from US beekeepers show Varroa mites becoming resistant to amitraz, the last widely effective miticide, contributing to record colony losses. (The Guardian)
Wild bees face their own pathogens, and there is growing evidence that diseases can spill over from dense managed honeybee colonies to native bee species.
4. Climate Change
Bees are finely tuned to seasonal rhythms – when flowers bloom, when queens emerge, when colonies expand. Climate change is scrambling those rhythms.
- Long-term datasets show that rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns are already shifting bee ranges and timing, sometimes pulling bees and the plants they depend on out of sync. (Nature)
- Extreme events – heatwaves, droughts, floods – can destroy flowers or kill bees directly, especially in regions with already degraded habitat.

5. New and Emerging Threats: War, Microplastics, Light
A 2025 Bee: wild report and related research add a new, unsettling layer: emerging threats we’re only just beginning to quantify.
Scientists warn that bees are also being hit by:
- War and conflict, which reduce crop diversity, destroy habitats and leave fields contaminated.
- Microplastics, which can contaminate pollen and water sources and may affect bee health.
- Artificial light at night, which disrupts nocturnal pollination, navigation and behaviour. (University of Reading)
These pressures stack on top of the old ones, amplifying risk. As one researcher put it, pollinators face “a perfect storm” of stressors.

What Do WWF and Other Organisations Say?
Environmental groups have been sounding the alarm on bees for years – but in increasingly urgent tones.
WWF: “Bees Are Essential to Food and Ecosystems”
WWF describes pollinators such as bees as “essential for our food production” and “critical for healthy ecosystems”, supporting more than three-quarters of the world’s food crops either directly or indirectly. (WWF EU)
In the UK, WWF and conservation charity Buglife found that in just one region – the east of England – 17 bee species have gone locally extinct, with another 25 threatened with extinction. (WWF UK)
WWF’s messaging is blunt:
- Bees are vital for food security and livelihoods, from smallholder farmers to major exporters. (greentrust.org.za)
- Pollinator declines will have “serious implications for biodiversity and food production” if left unchecked. (RHS)
- Policy action is needed: from reducing pesticide use and restoring habitats, to integrating pollinator-friendly measures into farm subsidies and land-use planning.
In North America, WWF emphasises the importance of the roughly 4,000 native bee species, noting that mason bees can be even more effective pollinators than managed honeybees for some crops. (World Wildlife Fund)
Other Voices: FAO, IPBES, Wildlife Trusts and More
- The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warns that pollinators are declining worldwide and that their loss would “unravel” agrifood systems, particularly in developing countries where many farmers rely on pollination-dependent crops for income and nutrition. (FAO.org)
- The IPBES Global Pollinators Assessment concluded that up to 40% of invertebrate pollinator species, especially bees and butterflies, may be threatened globally, with strong evidence of regional declines. (ipbes.net)

Across reports, the message is remarkably consistent: pollinators are central to food systems, biodiversity and climate resilience – and they are in trouble.
Would the World Really Collapse Without Bees?
Popular memes sometimes claim that humanity would die out “four years after bees go extinct”, a line often (incorrectly) attributed to Albert Einstein. That’s not how ecology, or agriculture, works.
The reality is more complex – and in some ways more worrying.
- Many staple cereals like wheat, rice and maize are wind-pollinated, so global calories wouldn’t vanish overnight.
- But a large share of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds – crucial for vitamins, minerals and healthy fats – depend on animal pollination for yield and quality. About one-third of global crop production is estimated to be directly or indirectly dependent on pollinators. (Our World in Data)
- Without bees and other pollinators, diets would become less diverse and more reliant on starchy staples; food prices for certain crops would likely rise; and some foods could become luxury items.
For ecosystems, the effects could be dramatic:

A world without bees wouldn’t be a sudden apocalypse – more a long, grinding erosion of colour, variety and resilience. Fewer wildflowers, fewer fruits, fewer birds. More fragile systems, less buffer against shocks.

If Bees Could Speak, What Would They Ask Us To Do?
Given the science – and the warnings from WWF, FAO, IPBES and others – what would our hypothetical talking bees demand?
1. Give Us Space: Restore and Connect Habitats
Bees need flower-rich, pesticide-light habitats connected across the landscape.
- On farms, that means hedgerows, wildflower strips, field margins, fallow corners and mixed cropping rather than endless monocultures.
- In towns and cities, it means planting native, nectar-rich plants in parks, gardens, allotments and even roadside verges; mowing less often; and avoiding paving over every scrap of soil.

2. Cut the Chemical Load
Scientists and NGOs are calling for:
- Stricter limits and better enforcement on high-risk pesticides
- Careful assessment of chemical mixtures, not just single substances
- Support for farmers to shift towards integrated pest management and lower-input systems

3. Fight Climate Change – and Plan for It
Protecting bees means tackling the climate crisis that is reshaping their world:
- Rapid cuts in greenhouse gas emissions to limit extreme warming
- Climate-smart conservation, such as protecting climate refuges, allowing species to move, and ensuring there are continuous corridors of habitat. (Nature)
4. Protect Science and Monitoring
You can’t save what you can’t see. Experts warn that cutting funding for bee monitoring and research – such as the threatened closure of a major US bee lab – would severely limit our ability to track declines and test solutions. (The Washington Post)
Talking bees would probably ask for more scientists counting them, not fewer.
5. Mobilise Citizens
Finally, NGOs are clear: ordinary people can make a real difference.
- Plant bee-friendly, pesticide-free flowers – especially native species – that bloom across seasons.
- Leave “messy” corners with dead wood, bare ground and leaves for nesting and overwintering.
- Support farmers and food brands that are pollinator-friendly, through certification schemes and purchasing choices.
- Pressure governments to adopt strong pollinator strategies, including robust nature restoration, pesticide reduction and climate action.

The Story We Choose Next
If bees could talk, they’d likely remind us that this is not just their story. It’s ours.
They would say: “We’ve pollinated your orchards and your forests for millions of years. We’ve helped feed your families, your livestock, your wildlife. We are small, but we are infrastructure.”
They are not yet gone. But in field after field, meadow after meadow, the chorus of buzzing wings is thinning.
The question for policymakers, farmers, companies and city-dwellers alike is simple: do we act while the bees are still talking – or wait until the silence forces us to listen?
